Simple Recipe For Hot Cross Bun

Hot cross bun are Sweet and spicy bun marked with a cross at the top symbolic to the crucifixion of Jesus.
This delicacy is mostly enjoyed on Good Friday

Although their are different types of hot cross bun which which some are non traditional including

So If you haven’t tried any of them yet, you should try this amazing recipe ASAP
as it brings the good old memories of good Friday and lent with splash of this spacy bun.

300ml milk
50g butter
500g bread flour
1 tsp salt
75g sugar
1 tbsp sunflower oil
7g yeast
1 egg , beaten
75g sultanas
50g mixed peel
1 orange zest(back shavings)
1 apple chopped
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Fruit jam to taste


Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Resting Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes


(1) Heat up the 300ml of milk until boiling point and add 50g of butter then after mixing allow it to cool down to room temperature

(2) Put the bread flour (500g) in a separate bowl and add 1 tsp of salt, 75g of sugar and 7g of yeast.

(3)Pour in warm milk-butter mixture and add 1 beaten egg. Mix well with a wooden spoon or hand until a sticky dough is formed.

(4) Spread the dough on floured surface and knead with rolling pin until soft and stretchy.

Shape dough into a ball and cover well in room temperature for about an hour

(5) Then add 75g sultanas, 50g mixed peel, zest of 1 orange, 1 finely chopped apple and 1 tsp ground cinnamon.

Knead into the dough,

Divide the dough into pieces Roll each piece into smooth ball on a floured surface to trap the stickyness.

Arrange the buns on strength line with little space for swelling up on a tray well painted with olive oil.

Now Cover properly then set aside to prove for 1 hr more.

Mix plan flour with water to make a thick past but also soft enough to move freely through the piping bag with a small nozzle. Draw a line along each bun, then repeat in the other direction to create crosses.You can also use icing sugar for this Alternatively.

Bake at 350F for about 20 minutes. Until golden brown.

Glaze with fruit jam of your choice.
